Welcome to the Hashamomuck Pond Page!
Hashamomuck Pond, located in the Town of Southold, is a truly
unique, valuable and beautiful place. The Pond and its habitat is of local,
state-wide, and national significance, and supports a wide array of species
including ospreys, hawks, diamondback terrapins, bay scallops, hard clams,
several finfish, and a large variety of nesting birds.
The ecological
importance of the Pond however, is threatened by polluted stormwater runoff. In
2006 the Peconic Estuary Program (PEP) developed a Watershed Management Plan for
Hashamomuck Pond (Restoration Plan). Since then, the
Peconic Estuary Program has partnered with the Town of Southold to secure grant
funds to implement the stormwater remediation projects identified in the plan.
These road drainage improvement projects will capture and treat polluted
stormwater runoff before it has a chance to enter the Pond.
On April
7th, PEP and Town of Southold (Town of Southold
) held a Hashamomuck Pond Public Watershed Meeting. Property owners and the
general public were invited (click here
for copy of letter) to hear about the upcoming road drainage improvement
projects and discuss actions residents can take to compliment the structural
projects (click here for powerpoint).
Thanks to those of you who were able to attend the joint Peconic Estuary Program (PEP) and Southold Town Stormwater
Runoff remediation presentation and discussion on April 7th. We had a great turnout to kickoff this important project! Please click here to view the thank you letter.
Together, the Peconic Estuary Program, Town of Southold and YOU! Can help protect and restore Hashamomuck Pond
and the Peconic Estuary! Continue to check back here for progress reports on the
project and future watershed event and activities!
