Peconic Estuary Program

As a boater, sailor and/or fisherman on the Peconics, you are enjoying one of the “last great places” in the world! The Peconic Estuary is a thriving, life-giving place – one of 28 Estuaries of National Significance. It is also at risk as human activity is causing this system to suffer. But, together we can help keep the Peconics healthy and safe for future generations.

Don't dump it, pump it!
The entire Peconic Estuary was designated as a Vessel Waste No Discharge Zone (NDZ) in 2002 in order to help protect our shellfish beds and keep our waters safe and clean for swimming and recreation. In a NDZ, treated and untreated discharges from marine toilets are prohibited. Pump-out boats and pump-out stations are available – often free of charge – for legal disposal of wastes. Is it high or is it low?
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) predicts tides for several locations in the Peconic Estuary. Click here for NOAA's 2010 tide tables.

Catch & keep 'em or catch & release 'em?
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) establishes and enforces recreational fishing regulations for all waters in the Peconic Estuary. Management measures include bag limits, size limits, closed seasons, gear restrictions, etc.

Note: A permit is required for fishing in ALL bodies of fresh water in New York State, including the Peconic River and other freshwater areas in the estuary. Click here for information on purchasing a NYS freshwater fishing license.

*As of 9/15/09 a permit is required for fishing in saltwater. Individual anglers may purchase the licenses ( after 9/15/09 ), online, over the phone, or at many retail establishments and county, town or village clerk offices. Click here for information on purchasing a NYS saltwater fishing license.
